Overview
Mississippi is building aggressively to meet Amazon’s data center load. Entergy Mississippi is constructing three large combined-cycle gas plants totaling 2.3 GW, while Amazon’s partnership with Entergy and TVA has enabled 1.3 GW of new renewable capacity across solar, wind, and battery storage. The state’s 15.9 GW interconnection queue and targeted transmission upgrades in DeSoto, Madison, and Grenada counties signal the grid is racing to keep pace with large industrial loads.
Generation Projects
Natural Gas
Entergy Mississippi is building three 750+ MW combined-cycle plants to serve new load growth, with Amazon named as a major driver.
- Delta Blues Advanced Power Station (Greenville, Washington County) broke ground in November 2024 with 754 MW of capacity, targeting 2028 commercial operation.[1]
- Vicksburg Advanced Power Station (Vicksburg, Warren County) will add 754 MW at the former Baxter Wilson site, with Amazon explicitly cited in the October 2025 announcement.[2]
- Ridgeland Advanced Power Station (Madison/Hinds counties) is planned for 760 MW, with construction starting in 2026 and expected online in 2029.[3]
Nuclear
Grand Gulf Nuclear Station remains a major baseload source for Entergy Mississippi, but no new nuclear construction is planned.[4]
Solar
Mississippi’s solar buildout is led by Amazon-backed partnerships with Entergy and TVA.
- Hope Solar + Storage (Clay County, TVA territory) will deliver 200 MW of solar paired with 200 MW/800 MWh of battery storage by late 2028 under an Origis-TVA PPA.[5]
- Golden Triangle II (Lowndes County, TVA) came online in 2024 with 150 MW of solar and a 50 MW/200 MWh battery system.[5]
- AWS + Entergy renewable buildout will enable 650 MW of new renewable projects in Mississippi over three years, bringing Amazon’s total carbon-free energy contribution in the state to 1.3 GW.[6]
Wind
Delta Wind Project (Tunica County) is Mississippi’s first utility-scale wind farm, featuring 41 turbines and backed by Amazon.[7]
Transmission and Grid
Entergy Mississippi is upgrading substations and transmission lines to connect new generation and serve large industrial customers.
- Grenada Industrial 115 kV substation, Mannsdale 230 kV substation (west Madison County), and Pine Tree 230 kV substation (DeSoto County) are part of Entergy’s load-growth response, targeting industrial and data center siting areas.[8]
- Snowden Park project (Southaven, DeSoto County) added new substation capacity and transmission lines in Northwest Mississippi to serve rapid commercial growth.[9]
- Ridgeland interconnection corridor benefits from an existing 115/230/500 kV transmission corridor, enabling large generation and load interconnections.[3]
- Superpower Mississippi is Entergy’s grid modernization plan bundling generation, distribution, and transmission upgrades to keep pace with new industrial demand.[2]
Battery Storage
Mississippi has two major solar-plus-storage projects online or planned.
- Hope Solar + Storage (Clay County) will pair 200 MW of solar with a 200 MW/800 MWh battery system by 2028.[5]
- Golden Triangle II (Lowndes County) came online in 2024 with 50 MW/200 MWh of battery storage.[5]
Data Center Power Agreements
Amazon has signed major renewable energy deals with Entergy and TVA to power its Mississippi data center operations.
- AWS + Entergy renewable energy deal will enable 650 MW of new renewable capacity in Mississippi, with grid upgrade funding over two decades and a total of 1.3 GW of new carbon-free energy tied to AWS.[6]
- Origis + TVA PPA backs the Hope Solar + Storage project (200 MW solar + 200 MW/800 MWh battery), expanding TVA’s Mississippi renewable portfolio.[5]
Interconnection Queue
Mississippi’s interconnection queue shows 87 active generation requests totaling 15.9 GW — a large pipeline relative to in-state load that suggests heavy study and upgrade workloads ahead.[10] Entergy’s targeted substation and line upgrades in DeSoto, Madison, and Grenada counties point to capacity constraints in areas courting large industrial customers.[8]
What to Watch
- Ridgeland Advanced Power Station construction timeline and final cost recovery filing with the Mississippi Public Service Commission.
- AWS renewable energy buildout progress toward the 1.3 GW commitment and additional PPA announcements.
- Interconnection queue processing speed as 15.9 GW of generation projects compete for study resources and grid upgrade capacity.
