482 acres on Pine Island's northern edge along Highway 52
Google publicly announced on February 24, 2026 that Pine Island will be the future home of a Google data center, resolving the prior uncertainty around the end user. Google and Xcel said the service agreement would add 1,400 MW of wind, 200 MW of solar, and 300 MW of iron-air battery storage to Xcel's grid, with Google providing $50 million for Xcel's Capacity*Connect program and paying service-related costs. A Goodhue County judge later issued a temporary restraining order halting construction of Project Skyway while MCEA's environmental-review lawsuit proceeds; this does not establish the data center's own IT load, so powerCapacityMW remains null.
