Google announced plans for a data center project in Hermantown on March 3, 2026. The city and Google jointly agreed to restart/update the AUAR process with a smaller 278-acre, 26-parcel study area and more specific information. The proposed project would include up to four data center buildings and supporting infrastructure. KAXE reported Hermantown was considering tax abatement and development agreements with Google, including $40 million to the school district over 28 years and $130 million in public infrastructure for a four-phase build-out, with agreements not expected to move forward until the AUAR process is complete. DCD reported a Minnesota Power agreement tied to 700 MW of new clean energy resources, but said the data center's expected power draw had not been disclosed.
